Character
The Ried Sulz Morillon 2021 is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from the Tement estate in Ehrenhausen, powerfully structured yet sharply defined. The 14.0% ABV reflects a fully ripe vintage, while the acidity keeps the richness perfectly in check. A wine of great substance and aging potential.
Terroir and Origin
Ried Sulz lies in the heart of Southern Styria, where Pannonian warmth meets cool currents of fresh air. The subsoil consists of Opok, the alternating layers of limestone and marl typical of the region. These deep soils provide the wine with its distinct mineral substance.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Morillon is the traditional Styrian name for Chardonnay. In Tement's cellar, spontaneous fermentation, extended lees aging, and the judicious use of large wooden casks define the style. The oak supports the texture here without ever masking the fruit.
On the Palate
Golden yellow with greenish reflections in the glass. The nose reveals yellow peach, apricot, and lemon zest, accompanied by floral notes and fine oak spice. Creamy texture carried by vibrant acidity, featuring butter pear, white peach, and hazelnut. The finish is long and distinctly salty.
Food Pairings
Pan-seared turbot with hollandaise sauce, lobster or spiny lobster, sweetbreads with morels, and aged mountain cheese. A white truffle risotto also possesses the necessary depth to match this wine.
Special Features
Erste STK Lage represents the highest quality tier of the Steirische Terroir & Klassik Weingüter association, co-founded by Manfred Tement in 1986. The estate began its transition to biodynamic farming in 2017; the 2021 vintage originates from this period.
