About this wine

Character

This Morillon relies on structure rather than loud fruit. Young, it appears compact, almost closed, concealing a Chardonnay of considerable substance and the saline tension the winery seeks in its single-vineyard wines.

Terroir and origin

Ried Sulz is one of the vineyards classified as Erste STK Lage in Southern Styria. Limestone-rich soils define the steep slopes around Ehrenhausen, where Josef Tement senior acquired two hectares in 1959, before Manfred Tement expanded the estate from 1976 onward to almost 100 hectares. Warm days and cool nights yield grapes with ripe aroma and preserved freshness.

Grape variety and vinification

Morillon is the Styrian name for Chardonnay. Restraint dominates in the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, extended lees ageing and the careful use of large wooden casks are part of the house style, which Armin Tement has overseen in the vineyard and cellar since 2005. The wine is vinified dry and has 13.0% vol.

On the palate

Golden yellow with greenish reflections. On the nose, Williams pear and quince, alongside brioche, roasted hazelnut and a hint of white blossom. Juicy and dense, carried by vibrant acidity and a creamy texture, with a long, saline finish.

Food pairings

With pan-fried turbot in beurre blanc, herb-crusted saddle of veal and aged Comté. Equally good with porcini risotto or white asparagus with hollandaise sauce.

Special features

The Erste STK Lage classification traces back to the Steirische Klassik, founded in 1986 by Manfred Tement together with like-minded winemakers. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, with the conversion beginning in 2017; the winery is a member of Respekt-BIODYN.
