About this wine
Character
This Grüner Veltliner exemplifies a full-bodied Wachau style, seamlessly uniting freshness and substance: vibrant energy, distinct spice, with nothing opulent or heavy. Vinified dry, 13.0% ABV.
Terroir and Origin
Ried Süssenberg is situated near Mautern in the Wachau, with vines rooted in loam and loess soils. Nikolaihof is regarded as Austria's oldest winery, resting upon the foundations of Favianis, a Roman fort dating back to 63 BC. The Saahs family has farmed the estate since 1894, transitioning to biodynamic practices according to Demeter standards in 1971. Today, the estate spans 22 hectares where wild herbs flourish among the vines.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Grüner Veltliner from biodynamic viticulture. The must fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, after which the wine matured for three and a half years in large, old wooden casks. A small proportion of botrytis grapes was deliberately included, revealing itself as a subtle note of honey beneath ripe citrus fruits. Throughout, the nose remains crystal-clear, mineral-driven, and highly intense.
On the Palate
The texture is multi-layered, leaning towards the silky rather than the creamy side. The acidity cuts through with vibrancy and juiciness, keeping the wine finely balanced and exceptionally fresh. Tension and depth carry through to a long finish, where the grape variety's characteristic peppery note emerges clearly.
Special Features
Demeter-certified: Nikolaihof was the first Demeter winery in Austria and is considered the oldest Demeter estate in the world. A 350-year-old wooden beam press still operates in the Roman vaulted cellar, while fermentation and aging take place in large Slavonian oak casks, in which some of the estate's wines rest for a decade or more.
