About this wine
Character
The Ried Zieregg Kapelle 2022 is a Sauvignon Blanc from Südsteiermark that leaves the grape's typical green notes almost entirely behind. Light golden yellow in the glass, deep and intense on the nose: cassis, mandarin, a touch of kumquat, followed by orange blossom, mint and sweet woodruff. A fine, lively and elegant style.
Terroir and origin
Ried Zieregg Kapelle is the plateau above the winery, at the foot of the Carmelite chapel. The plot measures 1.48 hectares, sits at 470 metres and receives sun all day long. The subsoil consists of heavy, water-repellent clay and loam over coral limestone, and the vines are around 20 years old. The Zieregg is divided into four plots and forms the heart of the estate in Ehrenhausen.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Sauvignon Blanc, spontaneously fermented. Ageing takes 30 months in neutral, used 700-litre vessels, after which the wine moves to stainless steel to harmonise. After fermentation, 2 grams of residual sugar remained with 7.4 grams of acidity, and the alcohol level is 13.0% vol.
On the palate
Complex, fresh and polished, deeply mineral and saline like liquefied stone, with iodine, lime juice and lemon juice. The oak imprint stays fine, and subtle tannin lends grip. The finish is long and piquant, gently peppery, saline and mouth-watering. Already a pleasure now, with plenty of potential still to come.
Special features
Tement farms nearly 100 hectares on steep slopes on both sides of the Slovenian border and began converting to biodynamic farming in 2017; the estate is a member of Respekt-BIODYN. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation, extended lees ageing and restrained use of oak define the house style. Armin and Stefan Tement run the estate in its third generation, with Armin responsible for viticulture and the cellar.
