About this wine
Character
One of the great Sauvignon Blancs of our time: bright, intense fruit paired with profound, stony minerality. The nose immediately reveals the remarkable tension that unfolds on the palate, featuring crushed rock, oyster shell, lime, preserved lemons, herbs, petrichor, a touch of white currants and a whisper of green pineapple.
Terroir and Origin
The Kår, pronounced 'Koar' and colloquially referred to as a cold ridge, is grandmother Edina's original house vineyard on the Kiesener Berg. The 1.84 hectares lie at an altitude of 377 to 440 metres, featuring a 30 to 35 percent slope, west-to-south exposure, and a cool microclimate. The soil consists of brown earth over coral limestone and blue calcareous marl with a high calcium and magnesium content.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Sauvignon Blanc, approximately 9,000 vines with an average age of 30 years. The must is spontaneously fermented, and aging takes place in large, neutral Doppelstück oak casks, giving the wine time to evolve without wood dominating the profile. The 2022 vintage measures 2 grams of residual sugar, 7.6 grams of acidity, and 13.0 percent alcohol by volume.
On the Palate
Pure, precise, stony. The wine is remarkably saline and vibrantly mineral, leaning aromatic towards green notes: lime, shoots, zest, verbena, pea pods and mint, complemented by subtle nuances of yellow fruit. The texture remains taut and austere, carrying immense drive and profound complexity. An exceedingly youthful wine with a long future ahead.
Special Attributes
Zieregg is the beating heart of the estate and is divided into four parcels; the Kår boasts a particularly limestone-rich subsoil. Tement farms the vineyards biodynamically, a transition that began in 2017. Restraint defines the cellar philosophy: spontaneous fermentation, extended lees aging, and the judicious use of large wooden casks.
