About this wine

Character

A nobly sweet Auslese that doesn't flaunt its ripeness. Medium straw yellow in the glass, fine and fragrant on the nose: bergamot, citron and mandarin, jasmine and orange blossom, alongside vine peach, almond, grapefruit juice and crushed slate with a hint of smoke. Everything remains clear and precise.

Terroir and origin

The Fahrlay is a highly stony, terraced parcel of Pünderich's Marienburg, south-facing and defined by brilliant blue slate with a high clay content and a small proportion of limestone particles. This rock gives the wine tension and minerality. Clemens Busch farms 20 hectares of steep sites, eleven of them in the Marienburg; the capsule colour indicates which of the three slate types a wine comes from.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling from overripe grapes without botrytis. Clemens Busch gave up herbicides in 1976 and has farmed biodynamically since 1986; the oldest vines root up to eight metres deep into the slate bedrock. In the cellar, 80 percent of the wines ferment spontaneously in centuries-old 1000-litre oak casks, without cultured yeasts, enzymes or fining. Even with the nobly sweet wines, sulphur additions remain minimal.

On the palate

The bergamot becomes Earl Grey tea, joined by stone fruit and citrus that feel ripe yet crisp. The sweetness is precisely matched to the acidity, the texture showing fine silkiness and creaminess. Fragrant, airy, dancing.

Special features

Nobly sweet at 7.5% vol.: a wine so drinkable that the 0.375-litre bottle feels far too small.
