About this wine
Character
A Riesling that favours energy over opulence. The nose remains shy and understated: mirabelle plum, quince and apricot shift between yellow and orange, joined by grapefruit and a touch of orange zest. Above this sit wild herbs and a tea-like note between nettle extract and sencha, earthy yet ethereally fresh.
Terroir and origin
The Felsterrasse belongs to the Pünderich Marienburg, where Clemens Busch farms eleven of his twenty hectares of steep vineyards. The light-grey slate is streaked with iron-bearing layers and is less weathered than in the surrounding areas. Rockfalls from the terraces above repeatedly strike the plot. The oldest vines root as deep as eight metres into the slate bedrock.
Grape variety and vinification
Varietal Riesling from ancient vines. The estate has worked without herbicides since 1976 and biodynamically since 1986. In the cellar, 80 percent of the wines ferment spontaneously in century-old 1000-litre oak casks, without cultured yeast, without enzymes, without fining, followed by extended ageing on fine lees. Vinified dry, 12.0% ABV.
On the palate
The entry is tightly knit and compact, the fruit loud and intense, greener and fresher than on the nose. A fine phenolic structure forms the backbone, herbal and earthy aromas define the flavour profile, with vegetal nuances of artichoke and pea emerging on the finish.
Food pairing recommendations
Fennel salad with pecorino, green apple and orange-pepper dressing, grilled sea bass with yellow beet and spelt kernotto or vitello tonnato with fried capers and bonito flakes.
Special features
A site under constant threat of rockfall, whose yield is repaid with a wine of dense minerality and depth. It shows the finesse of the cool 2021 vintage and needs a few years of bottle ageing to reveal its full potential.
