About this wine
Character
A nobly sweet Mosel Riesling that comes in at just 7.5% ABV and remains fresh and lively despite its pronounced sweetness. Clemens Busch has farmed Pünderich for seven generations, without herbicides since 1976 and biodynamically since 1986. His approach shows here in the wine's playfulness, elegance and easy drinkability, which lets it feel light without ever feeling slight.
Terroir and origin
The slopes of the Pündericher Marienburg face south, southwest and southeast, with soils made up largely of weathered grey slate. The vines are over 30 years old and cope with dry spells without difficulty. Of the estate's 20 hectares of steep vineyards, 11 lie within the Marienburg.
Grape variety and vinification
For the Spätlese, fully ripe Riesling grapes are selected, either healthy or with a light touch of botrytis. Fermentation happens spontaneously in an old wooden cask; at around 7.5% ABV, the wine is chilled and racked off the lees. Cultured yeasts, enzymes and fining are avoided, and even in the nobly sweet wines, sulphur additions remain minimal.
On the palate
Bright, pale golden yellow with green reflections. The nose shows green apple, sweet lemon, peach, juicy pineapple, mango, white blossom and honey over a cool, faintly smoky minerality, still a little reserved at this early stage of its development. The sweetness is pronounced and multi-faceted, held aloft by fine acidity. Patience pays off: the wine gains with longer cellaring.
