About this wine

Character

Dry Rheingau Riesling at 12.0% ABV from a top-classified vineyard (Erste Lage) in Oestrich-Winkel. The 2023 carries the estate's signature: crystalline clarity, taut acid structure, no heavy oak influence and no extended cellar ageing. A wine that tastes of place, not of cellar technique.

Terroir and origin

Klosterberg is one of the vineyards that Peter Bernhard and Viktoria Kühn cultivate across 21 hectares in the Rheingau, alongside Doosberg, Lenchen, St. Nikolaus, Hendelberg and Jungfer. Slate and quartzite define the soil profile and underpin the cool, linear minerality. Since the early 2000s, the estate has farmed biodynamically, with sheep grazing between the rows, horn manure and valerian; it has carried the Demeter seal since 2009.

Grape variety and winemaking

Pure Riesling, spontaneously fermented, unfined, with minimal use of sulphur. The same restraint applies in the cellar as in the vineyard. Before joining the estate in 2012, Peter Bernhard Kühn worked at Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace and with Burgundy producers, sharpening his feel for acid structure and extraction. Since then, the wines' contours have become more clearly defined.

On the palate

Lemon and green apple, joined by white blossom and a fine slaty spiciness. Acidity carries the wine through, the body stays lean, and the finish lingers long and clearly defined, with a saline, mineral echo.

Special features

The estate has been family-owned since its founding by Jacobus Kühn in 1786 and is now run by the twelfth generation. The Demeter logo appears on the label. Vinified dry, from a vineyard classified as Erste Lage by the VDP.
