About this wine
Character
A dry Riesling that favours clarity over richness. The acidity draws a straight line through the wine, the fruit stays cool, the finish salty. At 12.5% Vol. it remains lean and lively.
Terroir and origin
The Jungfer vineyard in Oestrich-Winkel is classified as a VDP.Grosse Lage. Slate and quartzite underpin the estate's Rieslings, giving them crystalline clarity, while the Jungfer site itself contributes a delicate spiciness. The Peter Jakob Kühn estate, founded in 1786 by Jacobus Kühn, farms 21 hectares according to Demeter principles and is now run in its twelfth generation by Peter Bernhard and Viktoria.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling, hand-harvested. Restraint governs the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal use of sulphur, no heavy use of oak. Peter Bernhard Kühn brought back a finer feel for acid structure and extraction from stints in Alsace and with Burgundy producers; the wines' contours have been sharper ever since.
On the palate
Clearly defined and bone-dry, with ripe peach and yellow apple, alongside garden herbs and a stony nuance. The grip remains subtle, the salty finish lingers long.
Food pairings
Pairs well with pan-fried pikeperch on lentils, scallops with lemon butter and steamed turbot, as well as feathered game such as pheasant breast or quail. It also carries hamachi sashimi well.
Special features
The estate has carried the Demeter seal since 2009, with the logo appearing on the label. The estate's Grosses Gewächse rank among the finest German Riesling has to offer.
