About this wine

Character

A dry Riesling with sharp contours: green apple and lemon over a mineral spiciness, backed by an acidity that keeps the wine upright. Nothing here masks anything else — the estate's style aims for clarity rather than fullness.

Terroir and origin

The Peter Jakob Kühn estate is located in Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau and farms 21 hectares planted almost exclusively to Riesling. Slate and quartzite define the house's wines. The VDP classified several sites as Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru), including Berg Roseneck.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Riesling. In the cellar, restraint is the guiding principle: spontaneous fermentation, unfined, minimal use of sulphur, no heavy oak treatment. Peter Bernhard Kühn, who runs the estate in its twelfth generation together with Viktoria Kühn, brought back a finer sense for acid structure and extraction after stints in Alsace and with Burgundy producers. 12.5% ABV.

On the palate

Dry and lean in build, the acidity sets the direction, and the mineral spiciness lingers into the finish. In magnum, the wine ages more slowly, giving it time for a long development.

Food pairings

With pan-fried pike-perch on lentils, scallops with citrus butter, refined veal dishes, and poultry for festive tables.

Special features

The vines are farmed according to Demeter principles, and the estate has held the certification since 2009; the Demeter logo appears on the label. Vineyard work includes sheep grazing between the rows, horn manure, and valerian.
