About this wine
Character
A single-varietal rosé from Pinot Meunier, bottled by Raphaël and Hannah Piconnet in Neuville-sur-Seine as Brut Nature, meaning entirely without dosage. With no sugar to soften it, the wine stands unadorned: austere, direct, carried by red fruit and a saline-tinged backbone.
Terroir and origin
The Côte des Bar in the southern Champagne region is home to the estate. Raphaël Piconnet grew up on the lieu-dit Bichery, where his grandfather Charles already farmed the slopes above the Seine. Today eight hectares are spread across Neuville-sur-Seine and Gyé-sur-Seine, on chalky soils. The estate's guiding principle: one parcel, one wine.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Meunier, produced using the saignée method, in which the must drains off purely under the weight of the must itself, picking up colour and fruit along the way. Fermentation starts spontaneously with wild yeasts, and ageing takes place in used oak barrels. Neither fined nor filtered, bottled with minimal sulphur, then aged at least 24 months on the lees.
On the palate
Deep, luminous rosé in the glass. On the nose, morello cherry and red berries, underscored by brioche. The palate opens dry and taut, the mousse fine, the fruit staying juicy without ever turning sweet. The finish lingers long and austere.
Food pairing suggestions
With rosy duck breast, Pata Negra ham, or seared scallops. A beetroot tarte tatin also finds a fitting counterpart in this Champagne.
Highlights
Since taking over the family estate in 2015, the Piconnets have farmed organically. Every Champagne from the estate is bottled as Brut Nature.
