About this wine
Character
A red wine made from Pinot Gris, slightly hazy garnet in the glass, spicy, tannic and savoury. It shows a layered complexity that unfolds further with air, staying lithe at 12.0% vol.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in Zellenberg between Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé, on 3.5 hectares of Jurassic limestone marl. Jolene Hunter and Paul McKirdy took over the parcels from Marc Tempé; they farm 14,000 vines per hectare by hand, with an average vine age of 45 years. The name refers to the trees of these terroirs: the samara is the fruit of the elm, the strobile that of the larch.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Gris is classified as a cépage gris, not a cépage blanc, and carries a dark pigmentation when fully ripe. It is precisely from this that a red wine emerges here, following the same process as the estate's Pinot Noir. Fermentation is spontaneous in old Burgundy barrels, with no added sulphur and no oenological aids. Grapes are harvested at pH 3.2.
On the palate
The nose opens with pale red berries, vineyard peach, ginger and spiced pear; after decanting, which the wine calls for, orange zest, cranberries and cool graphite notes emerge. On the palate it grips from the start, skin contact lending it a fine phenolic grip, the long finish recalling cinnamon and apple skin.
Food pairing recommendations
A wine that seeks out food and accompanies it with striking vitality: roast duck breast, braised leg of lamb, wild boar ragout or mature washed-rind cheese.
Special features
Since 2023, Jolene Hunter and Paul McKirdy have been working on their own account in Zellenberg, after McKirdy spent fourteen years running the cellar at Zind-Humbrecht. Their wines are released as Vin de France rather than under the Alsace AOC, and in Burgundy bottles rather than flutes, with a maximum of 25,000 bottles per year.
