About this wine

Character

A red wine built on drive rather than power. Marco Pfliehinger and Uwe Lange craft the Sankt Laurent in St. Leon-Rot just as the variety presents itself: with its fresh acidity, its colour and a moderate 12.0 % vol., without deacidification or additions meant to smooth it out.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in the Hasselbach vineyard on limestone, whose topsoil carries a high clay content and contains so much iron that the soil appears deep red. The yield was 27 kg per are, equivalent to around 20 hl/ha. Harvest took place on 21 September 2022.

Grape variety and vinification

Sankt Laurent forms large clusters and rarely builds up more than 85 degrees Oechsle. Forgeurac deliberately forgoes bleeding off, a method often used to concentrate the variety. The grapes go into the vat 100 % whole with stems, are foot-trodden and remain on the skins for around three weeks, all fermented spontaneously. Aged in used barriques, bottled without filtration.

On the palate

Dense cherry red with violet reflections. The nose is opulently fruity: sour cherry, cassis, blueberry, blackberry and sweet wild raspberry, with air Mediterranean herbs and floral notes emerge over warm wood spice. On the palate the juiciness remains, carried by a fine, lively structure and acidity. The invigorating spice and herbal aromas give it its energising quality, joined by a charming fruit sweetness.

Special features

Forgeurac works without pumps, filters or tractors. The 2.5 hectares are farmed entirely by hand, following biodynamic principles, pressed on an antique basket press, gravity-filled, hand-corked. The cellar sits in a 17th-century vault beneath an old village smithy.
