About this wine

Character

A dry Wachau Riesling from the 2008 vintage, whose sixteen years in wooden cask show not as weight but as calm. 13.0% ABV keeps it lean, its structure remains crystalline and filigree.

Terroir and origin

The wine comes from the Wachau vineyard Steiner Hund. The estate itself stands in Mautern on the foundations of the Roman fort Favianis from 63 BC, with the medieval Agapitus Chapel in its inner courtyard. The Saahs family has farmed the 22 hectares since 1894, biodynamically to Demeter standards since 1971. Wildflowers and herbs grow between the vines, while emerald lizards bask on the stone terraces.

Grape variety and vinification

Riesling, spontaneously fermented and matured in a large Slavonian oak cask. In the Roman vaulted cellar, a 350-year-old basket press made of oak beams is still in use. This vintage spent sixteen years in the 3,500-litre cask and was only bottled in April 2024, as the Archive Release 2024.

On the palate

Deep golden yellow with a greenish shimmer. On the nose, dried apricot, quince and honeycomb, along with candle wax and dried herbs. The palate stays taut: lemon zest, yellow peach, a chalky texture and a long, saline finish.

Special features

Nikolaihof was Austria's first Demeter-certified estate and is regarded as the oldest Demeter estate in the world; in the Wachau, it remains the only certified biodynamic producer to this day. Extended ageing in large wood is a hallmark of the house. Bottled in a 1500 ml magnum.
