About this wine
Character
The Grand Reserve is a selection of the finest sweet wines from the Zieregg, harvested from raisined berries that dried without botrytis. The result is a nobly sweet wine of crystalline precision: brilliant fruit, clear contours, 13.0% Vol. in the half bottle. Ready to drink now and over many years to come.
Terroir and origin
The Zieregg lies near Ehrenhausen in South Styria and extends across the border into Slovenia. Calcareous soils and steep slopes define the site, which is divided into four parcels: the Kapelle with the oldest vines, the particularly lime-rich Kår, the Steilriegel with gradients of up to 70 percent, and the Zieregg itself as the heart of the vineyard.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Sauvignon Blanc. The berries raisin on the vine, botrytis is deliberately avoided, and the wine is aged in large wooden casks. In the estate's cellar, spontaneous fermentation, extended lees ageing and restrained use of wood are the guiding principles.
On the palate
Surprisingly liquid for a Trockenbeerenauslese, flowing silkily with medium viscosity. The fruit of the nose returns, dried apricot and white peach preserve, meeting distinctly mineral notes that create tension, much like salt in caramel.
Food pairing recommendations
For dessert, Greek yoghurt with caramelised walnuts and honey. With fish, grilled tuna belly with melted Roscoff onions, with meat, spicy glazed pork belly with garlic, rosemary and habanero chillies.
Special features
A Trockenbeerenauslese made from Sauvignon Blanc without botrytis remains a rarity in the estate's range. Manfred Tement took over the estate in 1976 with three hectares; today the family farms nearly 100 hectares on both sides of the border, with Armin since 2005 and Stefan Tement since 2010 representing the third generation.
