About this wine
Character
The wine enters the glass with deliberate maturity, presenting itself as open and accessible without sacrificing an ounce of its depth and composure. Above the nutty, yeasty notes imparted by extended lees ageing—chopped almonds and braided brioche with marzipan and sugar glaze—hovers the aroma of red apple skin, accompanied by white currant, ripe pear, and mirabelle plum. Cardamom and cinnamon provide spice, garden cress, lemon balm, and sage bring freshness, while white pepper and coriander seeds reveal themselves to those who take their time. Apple and almond blossoms frame the bouquet with delicate finesse.
Terroir and Origin
Ried Sulz is the ancestral home of Pinot Blanc at the Tement estate: a warm, enclosed basin site in Southern Styria, perched between 400 and 473 metres above sea level with a south-southwest exposure. The vines grow on a 35-percent slope composed of calcareous marl and loamy sand soils. After a cool, damp spring and late flowering, the 2021 vintage delivered ideal ripening conditions from July onwards.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Pinot Blanc (Weisser Burgunder). Following spontaneous fermentation, the wine matures for 30 months on the fine lees in large, neutral oak casks and is bottled without filtration. 13.0% ABV, dry.
On the Palate
Clear, taut, pristine, and remarkably high in acidity for a Pinot Blanc. There is no creamy opulence here; instead, it delivers a pure, linear, and chalky personality. The fruit profile leans yellow rather than green with nuances of red, once again evoking the textured grip of red apple skin. The juiciness remains slender rather than broad, with pronounced herbal intensity and tremendous drinkability.
Special Features
An Erste STK Lage wine. The transition to biodynamic farming began in 2017, and the estate is certified by Respekt-BIODYN. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation, prolonged lees contact, and large wooden casks define the style.
