About this wine
Character
A Chardonnay of great brilliance that doesn't flaunt its power but channels it with elegance: citrus and delicate peach on the nose, alongside a mineral streak of sea breeze, flint and white bread crust. Its youth still brings a touch of yeasty notes, while sage and mint hint through and carry the wine's lively, refreshing drive.
Terroir and origin
Apetlon lies at the southeastern tip of Lake Neusiedl, where the Pannonian climate is felt with particular intensity: hot, dry summers, cold winters and extreme temperature swings. The soils are limestone and gravel, interspersed with sand. The single vineyard Tiglat was already planted in 1959; the name is an old dialect term for a small section of the vineyard.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay. Heinz Velich works with minimal yields and meticulous selection, fermenting spontaneously with wild yeasts. Ageing takes place in Burgundian barrels with extended lees contact and restrained use of sulphur; the wine matures considerably longer than most Austrian white wines before release. 14.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Juicy and complex, with pronounced fruit of apricot, quince, salted lemon and vineyard peach, joined by roasted hazelnuts and fine mushrooms. The long finish is razor-sharp and precise.
Food pairings
This wine pairs beautifully with culinary classics, ideally with an Austrian touch.
Special features
The Tiglat is the wine that made the Velich winery internationally famous. The vineyard planted in 1959, combined with patient ageing, yields a white wine with real ageing potential, offered here as a 1500 ml Magnum.
