About this wine
Character
The Ambre Rouge Pinots Macéré 2021 is a skin-fermented wine from Alsace that shows a brilliant Campari red in the glass. The nose stays reserved, favouring stone over fruit: barberry, redcurrants, apple skins, with damp pebble and a touch of lichen behind.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in the Grand Cru Sonnenglanz on clay-limestone soil, on vines planted by Pierre Trapet's grandfather. Domaine Trapet Alsace, based in Riquewihr, farms 15 hectares across four Grand Crus biodynamically: single wooden stakes instead of wire trellising, cover-cropped soils, and copper and sulphur kept to a minimum.
Grape variety and vinification
The wine is declared as Pinot Gris, Auxerrois and Pinot Noir; the base is a skin-fermented Pinot Gris with a small proportion of Auxerrois. Maceration lends colour and tannin to a white grape variety. The wine is vinified dry and reaches 14.0% vol. The Ambre wines carry the signature of Pierre and Louis Trapet, who have run the estate's day-to-day work since 2018.
On the palate
Here the stony character recedes and a warm fruit comes forward: ripe raspberries, wild strawberries, a hint of blood orange. The texture is silky, the fruit wrapped in fine but firm tannin, with a cool mineral vein running through. The finish is taut, bone-dry, dense and long.
Food pairings
Salad of duck aiguillettes and warm foie gras with walnut oil vinaigrette, lobster in butter with pink pepper, black truffle and fresh pea purée, or grilled octopus on aubergine caviar.
Highlights
The macerated Ambre series is the estate's experimental line, alongside Ambre Blanc from Muscat and Ambre Jaune from Riesling. The Ambre Rouge draws on fruit from a Grand Cru parcel with family history.
