About this wine

Character

An Alsatian Pinot Noir with fine spice and plenty of movement. Crisp fruit, noticeable tannin and an agile acidity make it both down-to-earth and refined: not overly complex, but demanding and above all very drinkable. 14.0% Vol., dry.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in five plots in and around Riquewihr in Alsace. One of them lies on the limestone soils of the Grand Cru Froehn and was planted in the 1960s, three more are scattered around the village. The limestone shapes this wine's acidity.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure varietal Pinot Noir. Andrée Trapet took over the family estate in 2002 and runs it together with Jean-Louis Trapet according to biodynamic principles; since 2018 the day-to-day work has been in the hands of sons Pierre and Louis. In the vineyards, échalas — traditional wooden stakes — support each vine individually, the soils are cover-cropped, and copper and sulphur are kept to a minimum.

On the palate

Medium ruby red with medium transparency. On the nose, crisp red and dark berry fruit with notes of stone, pepper and undergrowth. On the palate, crisp and fresh, spicy and piquant, with plenty of juice and a tannin that gives the Pinot Noir structure, as if a good dose of ripe stems had played a part. This is a wine you can chew on.

Food pairings

A selection of sausages and rillettes with farmhouse bread, terrine de campagne or râpés de pomme de terre with grated cheese and salad.

Special features

The name refers to the restored chapel in the centre of Riquewihr, built in 1441. Red wine remains a rarity in Alsace, and this one shows what Pinot Noir can achieve here when given room.
