About this wine
Character
An Alsatian red wine built on tension and freshness rather than richness: 12.5% vol., dry, lean in structure. In the glass, a deep purple-red with violet highlights.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Trapet Alsace is located in Riquewihr, on the slopes of the Vosges. Andrée Trapet took over the family estate in 2002 and runs it together with her husband Jean-Louis; since 2018, their sons Pierre and Louis have taken on the day-to-day work. 15 hectares are spread across the four Grands Crus Schlossberg, Schoenenbourg, Sonnenglanz and Sporen, on soils ranging from granite to shell limestone. The vineyards still feature échalas, wooden stakes that support each vine individually. The soils are cover-cropped, copper and sulphur are kept to a minimum, and biodynamic preparations strengthen the vines' vitality.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir. The family works according to biodynamic principles; Jean-Louis Trapet also vinifies Pinot Noir in Burgundy's Gevrey-Chambertin. The Chapelle 1441 rouge shows what this grape variety can achieve in Alsace when given room to express itself.
On the palate
The nose offers cool, lively fruit: sour cherry, wild raspberry, blackcurrant and rosehip, followed by graphite, undergrowth, leather, beetroot and a hint of liquorice and truffle. On the palate, raspberry and cherry flash through, carried by lively acidity and fine-grained tannin. The finish is saline and refined, calling for fine cuisine.
Distinctive features
A rare Alsatian red wine. Its name refers to the year the chapel in Riquewihr was built.
