About this wine
Character
A Riesling of great tension: freshness and mineral depth define it, with fruit kept subordinate to origin. Taut in structure, with a saline undertone, and a future that extends well beyond its current drinking window.
Terroir and origin
The Grand Cru site Schlossberg lies north of Kientzheim and Kaysersberg and ranges from 230 to 350 metres in altitude. The slope is so steep that it had to be terraced. The soils are shaped by granite along with a mix of greywacke and sandstone, with Thannenkirch granite added in the northern part; overall, they are exceptionally mineral-rich.
Grape variety and vinification
A pure-varietal Riesling from Domaine Trapet Alsace in Riquewihr, taken over by Andrée Trapet from her parents in 2002, with her sons Pierre and Louis leading the day-to-day work since 2018. The domaine farms biodynamically, using échalas, the traditional wooden stakes that support each vine individually, alongside cover-cropped soils and a minimal use of copper and sulphur. 13.5% vol.
On the palate
The entry is striking, with sharply defined acidity woven into the fruit and richness of the mid-palate. Lime, sweet apricot, wild mint, ginger and candied citrus peel carry the wine, whose finish is long and marked by salinity, vibrant acidity and fine tannin.
Special features
Schlossberg is one of four Grand Cru sites across which the domaine's 15 hectares are spread, alongside Schoenenbourg, Sonnenglanz and Sporen. In its youthful stage, the wine gains noticeably when decanted and served in large glasses.
