About this wine
Character
An uncompromisingly dry Riesling that draws its power from tension rather than richness. The acidity leads, the fruit takes a supporting role, and the wine needs time in the glass to reveal its depth.
Terroir and origin
The Schoenenbourg lies above Riquewihr on the slopes of the Vosges. Its marl soils produce complex, long-lived wines and lend a smoky, chalky note beneath the fruit. The vines are trained on échalas, the traditional wooden stakes that support each vine individually. The soils are cover-cropped, with copper and sulphur kept to a minimum.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling, vinified dry, 13.5% Vol. Andrée Trapet took over the family estate in Riquewihr in 2002 and runs it together with her husband Jean-Louis Trapet, who vinifies Pinot Noir in Gevrey-Chambertin, following biodynamic principles. Since 2018, day-to-day work has been in the hands of their sons Pierre and Louis. Biodynamic preparations strengthen the vitality of the vines.
On the palate
Straw yellow with greenish highlights. On the nose, lemon zest, yellow peach and a fine herbal spice. The palate opens taut and dry, with a dense texture and a long, saline finish.
Food pairings
Scallops, pan-fried turbot and pan-fried pikeperch, as well as veal fricassée or choucroute garnie. The wine also shows its structure well alongside aged goat cheese.
Distinctive features
At Trapet Alsace, 15 hectares are spread across four Grand Crus: Schlossberg, Schoenenbourg, Sonnenglanz and Sporen. The Schoenenbourg represents the estate's most long-lived, multi-layered side.
