About this wine
Character
A wine that reveals little yet holds nothing back. Intensely luminous cherry red with a dark core, above it a nose that builds in dark tones: morello cherry, sour cherry and blackberry still take up much of the space in its youth, while violet lends a delicate elegance. Behind these lie fine toasted notes and the spice of juniper berries and bay leaves. Deep and subtle, never showy.
Terroir and origin
Gevrey-Chambertin, where Domaine Trapet Père & Fils farms 18.5 hectares, including the three grands crus Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin and Latricières-Chambertin. The cuvée's name recalls 1859, the year the family acquired its first vineyard, "en Dérée". Jean-Louis Trapet runs the estate in its seventh generation, guided by a credo he himself puts this way: "Les hommes passent et la terre reste."
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir. Jean-Louis Trapet has farmed biodynamically since 1996, Demeter-certified since 2009. In the cellar, everything centres on precise soil work, observation rather than intervention, and gentle gravity-flow winemaking; the village wines use only 20 to 25 percent new oak. The grapes are guided, never forced.
On the palate
The fruit glides gently across the palate, the acid structure vibrating patiently in the background. The fine-grained tannin moves in step with fruit and acidity, never rushing ahead. This composure carries the wine outward through its balance, elegant and light-footed at 12.5% Vol. On the finish, fruit and spice come through in equal measure.
Distinctive features
Structure without heaviness, complexity without opulence: Trapet chooses finesse. The family history begins with Arthur Trapet, who in the 1880s secretly grafted vines onto American rootstocks – forbidden at the time, legal from 1888 onward, and today the foundation of modern viticulture.
