About this wine

Character

The Transnocho Reserva 2009 is a tautly built Rioja from Rioja Alavesa, bottled in magnum format and made for long bottle ageing. The colour is dark garnet with a black core. On the nose, blackberry and Amarena cherry, marzipan with dark chocolate, plus an ethereal note of eucalyptus and wild herbs.

Terroir and origin

Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza is located in Samaniego, where Fernando Remírez de Ganuza (1951–2024) founded his own estate in 1989, after twenty years as a vineyard broker. The estate farms 76 hectares across nine municipalities, divided into 246 parcels; 70 percent of the vines are over 70 years old. The calcareous soils of Rioja Alavesa give this wine the cool minerality that carries it.

Grape variety and vinification

The cuvée consists of 90 percent Tempranillo, 5 percent Graciano and 5 percent of the white varieties Viura and Malvasia. The name comes from the method: in the Transnocho process, the grapes are slowly pressed overnight for maximum extraction with minimal oxidation. This is followed by 22 months in new French oak, from which the notes of leather, dark tobacco leaf, vanilla and espresso derive.

On the palate

The attack is firm, the youthful tannin draws the wine in tight. Behind it lies ripe dark fruit, while the cool minerality strengthens the backbone. 14.5% alcohol by volume carries the dense body. At this stage, decant for at least half a day and use large glasses.

Food pairings

Porterhouse steak with anchovy butter and salad, crispy roast lamb with oven-baked potatoes or, for a vegan option, braised red cabbage rolls with a shallot, apple and bulgur filling.

Special features

In 1989, Fernando Remírez de Ganuza built Spain's first mechanical sorting table and has since separated the sun-exposed shoulders of the grapes from their tips. Since 2019 the estate has been run by José Ramón Urtasun, with Jesús Mendoza, chief winemaker since 2001, as cellar master.
