About this wine

Character

The Tros del Clos 2013 is a dry red wine made from pure Carignan, produced by Portal del Priorat in the south of Priorat and bottled in the 1500 ml magnum. Deep black-red with minimal violet highlights toward the rim. On the nose, minerality comes first, cool and complex; after extended aeration, intense notes of herbs, blackberry, blueberry, rowanberry and cassis emerge, spiced with cardamom, juniper and sandalwood.

Terroir and origin

The Clos del Portal estate lies near the villages of El Lloar and Bellmunt, stretching from the valley of the Siurana river toward the Montsant mountains. Of forty hectares, only fourteen carry vines, the rest being olive and almond trees and Mediterranean woodland. The soil is black llicorella slate, so barren and steep that phylloxera spared the old vines.

Grape variety and vinification

Carignan from ungrafted vines nearly a century old. Alfredo Arribas farms organically and biodynamically, limiting yield to around one kilogram of grapes per vine. In the cellar, winemaker Juan Asens works with spontaneous fermentation by wild yeasts, short macerations and minimal use of sulfur, with no new barriques employed.

On the palate

The same minerality found on the nose. Refreshing acidity and fine-grained tannin keep the opulent fullness elegant, while the oak treatment recedes entirely. Those drinking it now should decant it; however, experience shows the old Carignan vines also benefit from a few more years of aging.

Food pairings

A pie with mushrooms and root vegetables, venison in puff pastry with truffle and chestnut purée, or a lamb tajine with couscous and raisins.

Special features

Alfredo Arribas trained as an architect and designed bars and hotels in Barcelona before buying land in Priorat in 2001 and bottling his first wines in 2004. The magnum format gives this wine room for the years still ahead of it.
