About this wine

Character

An austere, densely built Nebbiolo from the 2020 vintage that shows its power through structure and spice rather than sheer body. Dark cherry, dried rose petals, liquorice, leather and tar sit side by side, held together by a mineral edge.

Terroir and origin

Vietti was founded in 1873 by Carlo Vietti in the medieval village of Castiglione Falletto, at 350 metres above sea level. In 1961 Alfredo Currado began vinifying grapes from individual vineyards separately, creating the region's first cru wines with the Rocche di Castiglione and the Barbaresco Masseria. Today the estate farms 75 hectares across nine crus, including Lazzarito, whose limestone- and marl-rich soils give this wine depth and athletic austerity.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Nebbiolo. The Lazzarito is made as a pure single-vineyard wine, without stylistic correction, letting the vineyard itself speak. At 14.5% vol. and vinified dry, it has the substance for a long life in the cellar.

On the palate

Powerful and dense, carried by a gripping tannic framework and fresh acidity. The dark cherry fruit stays cool, the finish long and spicy. The 3-litre format allows the wine to age more slowly and protectively than the standard bottle.

Food pairings

With Brasato al Barolo, braised beef, robust game dishes such as venison ragù, and long-aged Castelmagno.

Special features

Since 1974, the estate's bottles have featured original artworks by artists, including a drawing by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 2016 the Krause family took over the winery, and in 2025 Vietti was named Azienda dell'Anno by Doctor Wine.
