About this wine

Character

A Rioja that favours coolness and contour over sheer weight. The nose opens dark and deep, carried by concentrated yet never heavy fruit: plum, sweet cherry and morello cherry, flanked by blackberry, blueberry and cassis. A chalky, stony finesse captures this fruit immediately. Joined by roasted coffee, dark chocolate and generous liquorice, with eucalyptus, rosemary and juniper on the ethereal side, and finally black pepper, undergrowth, cedarwood and cold smoke.

Terroir and origin

The Viña Coqueta vineyard was planted in 1975 below the estate. At 11 hectares, it is the largest single vineyard on the property, which farms 76 hectares across 246 parcels; 70 percent of the vines are over 70 years old. The limestone soils of Rioja Alavesa shape the wine's minerality.

Grape variety and vinification

Tempranillo and Graciano. After harvest, the grapes are chilled for 24 hours before being meticulously processed. Fermentation takes place in neutral stainless steel and cement tanks, with ageing lasting at least 24 months in French and American oak barrels, measured in its use of new wood.

On the palate

Grippy, precise acidity and fine mineral tension. The tannin is soft, mellow and fine-grained. The fruit recedes compared to the nose and carries the wine without dominating it; spicy, earthy and ethereal notes take the lead. Juicy yet lively at once, the finish stays stony, cool and long.

Highlights

The wine was first bottled in 2005, and only in exceptional vintages since. In 1989, Fernando Remírez de Ganuza built Spain's first mechanical sorting table; at the estate, selection separates the sun-ripened shoulders of the bunches ("Hombros") from the tips ("Puntas"). José Ramón Urtasun has run the estate since 2019, while winemaker Jesús Mendoza has worked there since 1994.
