About this wine

Character

A Riesling defined by structure and texture rather than fruit. Tremendous vitality and tension, paired with transparency and clarity; despite its extended aging, it feels as though it is only just beginning its life.

Terroir and Origin

Nikolaihof is located in Mautern in the Wachau, built upon the foundations of the Roman fort Favianis dating back to 63 BC. The vineyard Im Weingebirge is considered the earliest documented vineyard in Europe, recorded as far back as 470 AD. The Saahs family has farmed the 22 hectares since 1894, and biodynamically since 1971: wild herbs flourish between the vines, while emerald lizards bask on the stone terraces.

Grape Variety and Vinification

100% Riesling. Pressed using a 350-year-old wooden basket press, the musts ferment spontaneously and mature in large Slavonian oak casks within the Roman vaulted cellar. The 2000 vintage was bottled in 2016 and released in 2024 as a late release. 12.5% ABV.

On the Palate

Creamy yet tightly knit from the very first sip, leading into a long-drawn-out finish. A fine acidity seamlessly ties everything together, while distinct phenolics lend the wine depth and seriousness. Accompanied by earthy, stony, and spicy notes ranging through to liquorice and beeswax, underpinned by juicy, clear peach and pear.

Food Pairings

Pan-fried pike-perch with porcini mushrooms, game fowl, and mature alpine cheese.

Special Features

Nikolaihof is Demeter-certified and regarded as the oldest Demeter winery in the world; within the Wachau, it is the sole certified biodynamic producer. The exceptionally long aging in large wooden casks is the hallmark of the Vinothek line; the 1995 Vinothek Riesling was the first Austrian wine ever to receive 100 Parker points in 2014. This vintage is presented in a 1500 ml magnum.
