About this wine
Character
A mature Riesling from Mautern in the Wachau, where fruit does not lead but structure and texture do. Transparency and clarity define the picture, carried by a vibrancy and tension that place this wine closer to the beginning of its development than its midpoint.
Terroir and origin
Nikolaihof is considered Austria's oldest winery, standing on the Roman foundations of the Favianis fort from 63 BC. The "Im Weingebirge" vineyard has been documented since 470 AD and is regarded as the first vineyard mentioned in a written record in Europe. The 22 hectares are farmed as a living organism: wild herbs between the vines, bees, and emerald lizards on the stone terraces.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling, spontaneously fermented and aged in large Slavonian oak foudres, pressed using a 350-year-old wooden press in the Roman vaulted cellar. This vintage matured for 16 years in wood, was bottled in 2016 and released in 2024 as a Late Release. 12.5% vol.
On the palate
The first sip is creamy yet firmly structured, and the wine expands into a long finish. A fine acidity binds everything together, while the phenolics lend seriousness. Alongside this, a range of earthy, stony and spicy notes leans towards liquorice and wax, with juicy, clear, subtle hints of stone and pome fruit behind them.
Special features
Nikolaihof has farmed biodynamically since 1971, was Austria's first Demeter-certified winery, and remains the only certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau. The Vinothek line, with its extremely long ageing in large wooden foudres, is the estate's hallmark: the 1995 Vinothek Riesling became the first Austrian wine to receive 100 Parker points, in 2014.
