About this wine
Character
A cool, powerful Riesling in which nothing distracts from its core: purism as a philosophy, with great brilliance and potential that will become clearer over the coming years.
Terroir and origin
The Vogelsang lies above Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, once a well-known site that later fell into obscurity. In 2017, after years of strictly conventional farming, the vineyard came to the Christmann family through a land exchange, and they converted it to biodynamic farming straight away. The soil consists of shell limestone, formed more than 200 million years ago. The slope faces south with a gradient of up to 50% and reaches an altitude of 260 metres. Yields are kept to 40 hl/ha so the grapes can reach their full depth of flavour.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. The juice spent a few hours on the skins, fermented spontaneously at a fairly warm temperature, and matured in a large oval cask (Doppelstück). 12.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Even the nose stays cool and clear: juice and zest of limequats and lemons, wet crushed stone, oyster shells, seagrass and lichen, garden and wild herbs, along with eating and cider apple. On the palate the wine pulsates, taut and precise, carried by high acid tension, while also revealing a fine, silky elegance and a charming side.
Special features
The first Grosses Gewächs from the Vogelsang. For several years the wine was bottled as a VDP.Ortswein under the name Neustadt V.; today the site is classified among the VDP.GROSSE LAGEN of the A. Christmann estate in Gimmeldingen. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2003 and is certified under respekt-BIODYN as well as EU organic.
