About this wine
Character
This Riesling does not seek greatness, but clarity: a perfectly matured wine of balance, silky texture, and an understated character that makes it effortlessly drinkable. Finesse and high drinkability take precedence over power and extract.
Terroir and Origin
The Mautern vineyard Ried «vom Stein» is a single vineyard within a single vineyard. It belongs to Ried «Silberbichl» and borders the vineyards «Zaum» in Mautern and «Am Zaum» in Furth. The 4.2 hectares extend north-northeast up the slope from 209 to 237 metres, on deep-tilled rigol soils of loam, loess, and Danube gravel.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Riesling, dry, with a moderate 12.0% ABV. Nikolaihof, Austria's oldest wine estate, has farmed its 22 hectares biodynamically according to Demeter standards since 1971. A 350-year-old wooden beam press operates in the Roman vaulted cellar; the musts ferment spontaneously in large Slavonian oak casks, where the wines mature for an extended period.
On the Palate
In the glass, a deep yellow like a ripe Delicious apple. The nose reveals a broad spectrum of ripe yet fresh fruit without any heaviness, joined by bright blossoms and a vegetal note. The first sip is fresh, clear, and harmonious; acidity, sweetness, alcohol, body, and texture interlock seamlessly, with no single element dominating.
Special Features
The 2006 vintage was released to the market only in 2024 as an Archive Release. Nikolaihof was Austria's first Demeter-certified winery and is recognized as the oldest Demeter wine estate in the world; the estate rests on Roman foundations dating back to 63 BC.
