About this wine

Character

The Riesling Federspiel 2016 from Nikolaihof is a late release: it spent six years in large, old wooden casks before being bottled in June 2022. It shows no signs of premature aging, yet displays spicy, mature notes. At 12.0% ABV, it remains remarkably light on its feet.

Terroir and Origin

Grown in the Wachau on loess-loamy Danube gravel in the Vom Stein vineyard. Nikolaihof is Austria's oldest wine estate; the Saahs family has cultivated it since 1894, with Nikolaus Saahs managing the estate since 2005. Wild herbs thrive between the vines across the 22 hectares, while green lizards bask on the stone terraces.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Single-varietal Riesling. The estate has been farming biodynamically since 1971, using nettle liquid manure, valerian drops, horsetail tea, and homemade preparations instead of herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides. The musts ferment spontaneously in large Slavonian oak casks; the Roman vaulted cellar houses a 350-year-old wooden basket press made from oak beams.

On the Palate

The nose reveals linseed oil, nutshells, acacia blossom, and mace, overlaid with dried fruit, orange blossom, and basmati; it evolves constantly, making decanting essential. The attack is juicy and mouth-watering, the acidity is polished and precise, and the intensity feels electric. The finish remains spicy and long.

Food Pairings

Oven-roasted root vegetables with preserved lemon and sesame, char with sorrel sauce, and Chinese BBQ lamb ribs with chili and cumin.

Special Features

Nikolaihof was Austria's first Demeter-certified winery and is recognized as the oldest Demeter winery in the world. Extended aging in large wooden casks is the estate's hallmark; this Federspiel is presented in a 1500 ml magnum.
