About this wine
Character
The Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd 2004 comes as an Archive Release 2024 from the cellars of Nikolaihof in Mautern, twenty years after harvest. The nose is concentrated, clear and spicy, fully mature: papaya, mango, orange segments, followed by an entire spice rack ranging from anise and fennel seed to roasted pumpkin seed and bay leaf.
Terroir and origin
The Mautern Ried Vom Stein is a vineyard site within a vineyard site: it belongs to the Ried Silberbichl and borders the Rieden Zaum in Mautern and Am Zaum in Furth. A neat 4.2 hectares climbs the slope towards the north-northeast, from 209 to 237 metres, shaped by rigol soils of clay, loess and Danube gravel.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling, vinified dry at 12.5% vol. At Nikolaihof, the musts ferment spontaneously and mature in large Slavonian oak casks, some for a decade or longer. A 350-year-old tree press made of oak beams operates for this purpose in the Roman vaulted cellar.
On the palate
The fine interplay of acidity complements the coarse-grained texture, and on the palate the entire aromatic profile seems to come together; fruit and spice return retronasally. At medium intensity, the finish asserts itself with balancing pressure and good length.
Special features
Nikolaihof stands on the Roman foundations of the Favianis fort from 63 BC; the Saahs family has run the estate since 1894, and biodynamically to Demeter standards since 1971. The 22 hectares work as a living organism, with wild herbs growing between the vines and green lizards basking on the stone terraces.
