About this wine
Character
A dry Riesling from the Wachau, released to the market eighteen years after the harvest as an Archive Release in 2024. At 13.0% ABV it remains sleek; the extensive maturation reveals itself in serenity and clarity, rather than heaviness.
Terroir and Origin
Grown at Nikolaihof in Mautern, Austria's oldest winery. The estate stands on the foundations of the Roman castrum Favianis, dating back to 63 BC. Across 22 hectares, the Saahs family has farmed biodynamically according to Demeter standards since 1971: wild herbs thrive among the vines, while emerald lizards bask on the stone terraces.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Riesling. Pressed in the vaulted Roman cellar using a 350-year-old wooden beam press made of oak, the musts ferment spontaneously in large Slavonian oak casks. Some of the estate's wines remain there for a decade or more before leaving the winery.
On the Palate
On the nose, dried apricot, beeswax, and lemon balm layered over a cool stony note. Taut and focused on the palate, offering ripe citrus fruit and white peach on a saline texture with delicately woven acidity. The finish lingers, persistent and herbal.
Food Pairings
Pairs wonderfully with pan-seared pike-perch on lentils, saddle of veal, and dishes featuring morels.
Special Features
Nikolaihof was Austria's first Demeter-certified winery, is considered the oldest Demeter winery in the world, and remains the only certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau to this day. The 2006 vintage was released onto the market in 2024 as a late archive release.
