About this wine
Character
A Riesling that translates its maturity not into heaviness, but into clarity: crystalline, delicately structured, and moderate in alcohol at 12.5% ABV. The 2014 vintage was released only in 2024 as an Archive Release, bottled in a 1500 ml magnum.
Terroir and Origin
Nikolaihof is located in Mautern in the Wachau, built upon the foundations of Favianis, a Roman fort dating back to 63 BC. The Saahs family cultivates the 22 hectares as a living organism: wild herbs between the vines, bees, and green lizards on the stone terraces. You can taste this biodiversity.
Grape Variety and Vinification
100% Riesling. In the Roman vaulted cellar, a 350-year-old wooden beam press made of oak is still in operation. The musts ferment spontaneously and age in large Slavonian oak casks, some for a decade or longer. The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 1971, making it the first Demeter-certified winery in Austria.
On the Palate
Golden yellow with greenish reflections in the glass. The nose reveals ripe apricot, yellow apple, and dried herbs, backed by beeswax and lemon balm. The wine remains taut, the acidity carries the maturity, and the finish is salty-mineral and long.
Special Features
Nikolaihof is considered the oldest winery in Austria and the oldest Demeter estate in the world; to this day, it remains the only certified biodynamic producer in the Wachau. Extended aging in large wooden casks is the hallmark of the house, and this late release in magnum format showcases what it does for a Riesling.
