About this wine
Character
A quiet, concentrated Pinot Blanc. The fruit deliberately steps back, while tension, texture and a fine veil of lees hold the elements together. The wine works through calm and clarity rather than loud aromatics.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on very sparse, limestone-rich soils in Southern Styria. The Tement winery in Ehrenhausen cultivates almost 100 hectares on the steep slopes on both sides of the Austrian-Slovenian border. Manfred Tement took over three hectares of vineyard in 1976; today his sons Armin, responsible for viticulture and cellar, and Stefan also work at the estate.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Pinot Blanc, fermented in large wooden casks of Styrian oak. Malolactic fermentation ensures full biological deacidification. The wine then ages three years on the fine lees, first in cask, later in steel tank. 12.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
The entry is taut and vibrant, the acidity crystal-clear and without any harshness. The structure feels dense, with fine phenolic particles giving grip and rhythm. As it develops, the creamy richness of the long lees ageing joins in without slowing the drive. The fruit remains an echo: pear, grapefruit, bergamot, lime zest. With air, the lees note turns nuttier, almost like fresh bread crust, joined by mint, fennel, lemon verbena and aniseed. The finish is long and saline.
Special features
A special bottling: the wine was only bottled after three years on the fine lees, hence the designation Spätfüllung (late bottling). In magnum format at 1500 ml, its further development proceeds more slowly and evenly. In the vineyard, the winery works biodynamically and is a member of Respekt-BIODYN.
