About this wine
Character
A dry white wine with 12.5% ABV that takes the Welschriesling grape seriously: complex, multi-layered, and driven by crisp acidity. Far from a fleeting summer sipper, this is a single-vineyard bottling with remarkable drive and depth.
Terroir and Origin
The grapes are cultivated in the single vineyard Ried Ottenberg Veitlhansl in Southern Styria, on loamy clay and calcareous sandstone soils. Weingut Tement in Ehrenhausen farms nearly 100 hectares of steep slopes spanning both sides of the Slovenian border—back in 1976, when Manfred Tement took over the estate, it comprised just three hectares. Today, the third generation, led by Armin Tement, oversees viticulture and cellar management.
Grape Variety and Vinification
100% Welschriesling. The wine underwent a natural, spontaneous fermentation followed by 28 months on the fine lees in neutral 500-litre casks; it was bottled unfiltered. The extended lees contact provides density without subduing the vibrant acidity, while the neutral oak remains subtly integrated in the background.
On the Palate
The nose reveals green apple, orange zest, and mandarin, alongside an herbal and vegetal profile featuring stinging nettle, lemon balm, celery, artichoke, and parsnip. With aeration, delicate matchstick nuances, aniseed, and oyster shell emerge. On the palate, it is playful, lively, and refreshing, boasting immense expression and drive, minerality, and salinity; the crisp acidity carries a dense, juicy body.
Special Attributes
The transition to biodynamic farming began in 2017. In the cellar, the estate relies on spontaneous fermentation, extended lees aging, and discreet oak use. The wine carries the protected designation of origin Südsteiermark DAC.
