About this wine

Character

The Abrí Las Alas 2017 is a single-varietal Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, grown at 800 metres and aged for over 19 months in French barriques. It appears extroverted and graceful: dark, fleshy fruit, spicy depth and a cool line that lifts the weight of its 15.0% ABV.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come exclusively from the El Nogal de la Valera parcel, which is not located at the estate in Quintanilla de Arriba but further south near La Horra, at 800 metres above sea level. Vines over 80 years old are rooted there in sand and clay. Yields are minimal, and concentration correspondingly high.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Tempranillo, 19 months in French barriques. In the cellar, gravity moves the grapes from one station to the next, without pumping or mechanical stress. Since 2011, oenologist Luca d'Attoma has advised the estate and shaped its style: less extraction, shorter maceration times, precise use of oak.

On the palate

Cool minerality and chalky purity carry the wine, the fruit shows full and rich, with blackberry, black cherry and cassis from the nose returning on the palate. A very fine-grained tannin lends structure and tension, joined by pepper, graphite and a hint of coconut from the barrel.

Food pairings

With T-bone steak with Mediterranean herbs, caponata and wild herb salad, with lamb shoulder Provençal style with papas arrugadas and green beans, or, for a vegetarian option, with tomato bake with olives, capers and goat cheese.

Highlights

Only 350 bottles are made of this wine, whose name means "I opened my wings". Charo Agüera, a violinist with the Spanish National Orchestra for three decades, assesses the barrels for balance. The award-winning bodega operates independently of the power grid. Master of Wine Pedro Ballesteros ranks the Abrí Las Alas among the ten best wines of Ribera del Duero.
