About this wine
Character
The power of very old vines expressed with restraint: concentrated, yet linear, subtle and layered. This Tempranillo is defined by tension and freshness rather than sheer power.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come exclusively from the El Nogal de la Valera vineyard near La Horra, south of the winery, at 800 metres above sea level. Tempranillo vines over 80 years old are rooted here in sand and clay. Temperature swings between winter and summer, as well as between day and night, are extreme, and yields are minimal — hence the concentration.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Tempranillo. Fermentation takes place in a small concrete tank, after which the wine ages for 19 months in French barriques; it is bottled dry, at 15.0% vol. Since 2011, oenologist Luca d'Attoma has advised the Moyano family: less extraction, shorter maceration times, more precise use of oak.
On the palate
Ruby red in the glass. The bouquet is subtle and expressive, with fresh dark fruit and earthy, mineral notes; the oak tones stay in the background, adding to the complexity. Then comes juicy fruit, a velvety texture and elegant tannins, together with a vibrant, energetic drive and a long, invigorating finish. Throughout, the wine retains its precise contour.
Highlights
Abrí Las Alas means "I opened my wings". Charo Agüera played the violin for over three decades in the Spanish National Orchestra and now judges, eyes closed in front of the barrels, whether a wine has found its balance. The bodega is connected to neither the public power grid nor the water supply, with photovoltaics supplying 90 to 95 percent of its electricity. Master of Wine Pedro Ballesteros ranks the Abrí Las Alas among the ten best wines of Ribera del Duero.
