About this wine
Character
Dense, generous and, despite its 15% alcohol by volume, carried by freshness. Stately in stature yet light on its feet: minerality and acidity define the palate and keep the fruit lively.
Terroir and origin
The wine comes exclusively from the El Nogal de la Valera plot in La Horra, at 800 metres altitude. Vines over 80 years old root here in sand and clay, yields are minimal and concentration correspondingly high. Cool nights preserve the acidity.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Tempranillo, known here as Tinta Fina. The wine aged for 19 months in small French oak barrels. Luca d'Attoma, the estate's consultant since 2011, works with less extraction, shorter maceration times and precise oak handling; the toasted notes therefore stay in the background.
On the palate
The nose opens with coconut flakes, vanilla and black pepper, followed by cinnamon plum, grated cinnamon and clove, then sweet cherry, blackberry, cassis and elderberry. Violet and lilac in the background, along with sage, rosemary, mint, eucalyptus and pine needles. On the palate it flows silky, the tannin is fine-grained, the texture meaty and bloody. Acidity and minerality alternate, making it juicy; subtle bitter notes and ethereal nuances carry the finish.
Food pairings
Flank steak with green beans and Jerusalem artichoke, braised lamb loin with oriental jus and sweet potatoes or, for a vegetarian option, salt-crust celeriac with basil pesto and oven-roasted tomatoes.
Highlights
Only 1100 bottles were produced. Master of Wine Pedro Ballesteros ranks the Abrí Las Alas among the ten best wines of the Ribera del Duero; the name means "I Opened My Wings". The bodega is connected neither to the power grid nor to the water supply: photovoltaics cover 90 to 95 percent of its electricity, the angled roof collects rainwater, and inside, gravity moves the grapes from station to station.
