About this wine
Character
A white Garnatxa Blanca with weight and grip: dense, creamy, carried by 14.5% ABV and threaded through with a stony austerity that keeps the richness in check. Vinified dry, with a long saline finish.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from Montsant, from the very old and barren "El Masroig" vineyard. In some years Alfredo Arribas rounds out the wine with grapes from the "Notaria" vineyard, whose soils are heavier. The Barcelona-based architect farms over 80 hectares between Priorat and Montsant, many vines on original rootstock, some nearly a hundred years old. Bottling takes place in Gratallops.
Grape variety and vinification
A single-varietal Garnatxa Blanca (Grenache blanc). In the cellar, Alfredo Arribas holds back: native yeasts, short maceration, minimal sulphur. His oenologist Juan Asens shares this approach, as little intervention as possible, as much as necessary. Work in the vineyard is organic and increasingly biodynamic, for Arribas a matter of precise craftsmanship rather than doctrine.
On the palate
On the nose, honeydew melon, papaya and pomelo alongside toasted grain, barley malt and cornflakes, plus bay leaf, white pepper, turmeric and the steam of cooking basmati rice. The wine rolls in broad and creamy, the yellow-fleshed fruit gaining ripeness and volume compared to the nose. It finally returns to salinity, long and mouth-watering.
Food recommendations
Recommended pairings are gratinated cauliflower with smoked sheep's cheese, black olives and mashed potato, seared king prawn with red pepper sauce, watermelon and nasturtium, as well as grilled saddle of lamb with yellow pepper and wild garlic polenta.
Highlights
"Tros" means piece or plot in Catalan, and for Alfredo Arribas denotes single-vineyard wines. He designed the winery himself, built from corten steel and local stone, before deciding to also make wine there; he bottled his first vintage in 2004. This vintage comes as a 1500ml magnum.
