About this wine
Character
The Tros Blanc Saleras 2017 is a dry white wine from a single plot in Montsant, grown from nearly seventy-year-old Garnacha Blanca vines. Maturity has arrived and suits it well: nutty tones, toasted brioche with salted butter, ripe apple and intense peach, along with cold smoke. Over the top lie sage and menthol, keeping the nose cool and long.
Terroir and origin
The site sits at 325 metres above sea level in Montsant, with soil of sand over a chalky base. Planting density is 2000 vines per hectare. Alfredo Arribas, an architect from Barcelona, farms over 80 hectares between Priorat and Montsant, many vines on their original rootstock. Work in the vineyard is organic and increasingly biodynamic.
Grape variety and vinification
Garnacha Blanca, interspersed with a few Macabeo vines planted alongside it from the outset. The harvest took place in the last week of August 2017. Fermentation takes place in large French oak vats, followed by ten months' ageing on the lees in 500-litre tonneaux. 14.0% ABV.
On the palate
The first sip arrives lush and powerful, but is immediately reined in by a precise, chalky vein that lends restraint and elegance. Rich texture, offset by earthy, mineral tones. Hay and dried herbs define the aromatics, while the fruit recedes. On the finish, roasted almonds and salted dough linger, accompanied by pronounced umami notes.
Food pairings
Pan-fried turbot, roasted poultry with almond sauce or roasted cauliflower with hazelnut butter.
Distinctive features
Tros is Catalan for piece or plot, and at Arribas it denotes wines from single sites. The same principle applies in the cellar as at the drawing board: less is more, native yeasts, minimal sulphur.
