About this wine
Character
A purist, Mediterranean-styled white wine. The nose offers blossoms of acacia, apple and orange alongside zest of ripe orange, yellow and red apple skins and a touch of apricot. Behind this lies a spicy depth of freshly chopped almonds, sage, thyme and the ethereal note of pine groves.
Terroir and origin
The Saleras plot sits at 325 metres altitude in Montsant, on sandy, limestone-rich soil. The vines average 70 years of age. Alfredo Arribas, an architect from Barcelona, followed a childhood memory to Priorat in 2001 and today farms more than 80 hectares between Priorat and Montsant. Tros means "piece" or "plot" in Catalan and, for him, denotes wines from single sites.
Grape variety and vinification
White Grenache and Macabeu are planted together in the plot. Fermentation takes place in open oak vats, after which the wine ages for ten months on the lees in 500-litre French oak barrels. The oak stays in the background, with alcohol at 13.5% vol.
On the palate
Here the wine is quieter than on the nose, its texture calm and precise. Delicate fruit of orange, apricot, apple and quince meets a medium-bodied, well-integrated acidity. The minerality — chalky, angular and slightly saline — carries the wine like a backbone. Joining it are dried thyme, sage and pine needles, a nutty almond note and a saline, almost green olive tone.
Special features
In the cellar, Alfredo Arribas works with native yeasts and minimal sulphur, farming organically in the vineyard and increasingly biodynamically. For him this is not an ideology but precise craftsmanship, shared by his winemaker Juan Asens: as little intervention as possible, as much as necessary.
