About this wine

Character

An der schönen blauen Donau 2024 is a dry white cuvée from the Vienna Nussberg, crafted for freshness and high drinkability. At 12.5% ABV, the wine remains light, drawing its vibrant energy from acidity rather than power.

Terroir and Origin

Hajszan Neumann cultivates 20 hectares on the Nussberg in Grinzing, one of the city's most traditional vineyard sites. The vines grow on weathered limestone soils across the Nussberg, Weissleiten, and Steinberg vineyards; some of them rank among the oldest in Austria. Vienna is one of the few capital cities worldwide with vineyards located directly within its city limits.

Grape Variety and Vinification

This white cuvée comes from biodynamic viticulture. It matured for ten months in used 600-litre French oak casks, which impart no oak spice, contributing only time and gentle aeration. Minimal sulphur was added at bottling.

On the Palate

The opening belongs to lemon, green apple, and fresh ginger, complemented by lemon balm, lemon thyme, and elderflower. A fine minerality and a hint of white pepper round off the bouquet. On the palate, the wine glides through vibrantly with crisp acidity, remaining mouth-watering right through to the dry finish.

Food Pairings

Served well-chilled, this wine is wonderful on its own or alongside casual snacks.

Key Facts

Fritz Wieninger took over the winery in 2014 from Stefan Hajszan and Heinz Neumann, continuing it as a natural wine project on the Nussberg. Stefan Hajszan was the first Viennese winemaker to convert to biodynamics here in 2006; Fritz Wieninger serves as co-president of respekt-BIODYN, and the estate is certified accordingly.
