About this wine
Character
Hajszan Neumann is Fritz Wieninger’s natural wine playground on Vienna’s Nussberg, and this wine makes no secret of it: skin-fermented, unfiltered, and nimble in the glass at 12.5% ABV. Rough edges are expressly desired here, and the wine is unapologetically polarizing.
Terroir and Origin
Vienna is one of the few capitals with vineyards within its city limits. The winery’s 20 hectares are located on the Nussberg in Grinzing on weathered limestone soils, distributed across the Nussberg, Weissleiten, and Steinberg vineyard sites. Some of the vines are among the oldest in Austria.
Grape Varieties and Vinification
Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Weissburgunder, Traminer, and Muskateller grow side by side in the vineyard, are harvested together, and fermented together on the skins. It is neither fined nor filtered. The vines are cultivated biodynamically.
On the Palate
Dry, with refined acidity and the grip imparted by skin contact. Aromatically rich with ripe pear and white peach, joined by citrus zest and dried herbs.
Food Pairings
Pairs wonderfully with Wiener Schnitzel, Liptauer on bread, and potato goulash, as well as with grilled vegetables and mature cheese.
Special Features
In 2006, Stefan Hajszan became the first Viennese winemaker to convert the estate to biodynamics; in 2014, Fritz Wieninger, co-president of RESPEKT-BIODYN, took over. It was here that the first Wiener Gemischter Satz was produced as a natural wine. The winery is certified by respekt-BIODYN.
