About this wine

Character

The Arbossar 2019 combines dark fruit with cool herbal spice. On the nose, violet and violet pastilles, blackcurrant leaf and beetroot, alongside elderberry, morello cherry and sloe, underscored by rosemary, juniper and candied black olives. Still youthful, with promising ageing potential.

Terroir and origin

The vines grow in Torroja del Priorat at 350 to 400 metres altitude, on black Licorella slate and granite. Arbossar is one of the estate's single-vineyard selections, whose 15 hectares are farmed organically and biodynamically. Dominik Huber harvests early and counters the hot summers with biodynamic preparations in the vineyard.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Carignan from 90-year-old vines. Whole-cluster pressing, fermentation and ageing in cement tank. Dominik Huber and head winemaker Tatjana Peceric have worked with whole-cluster infusion since 2009: the berries stay whole, no pumping-over is done, and punch-downs are no longer used. Infusion rather than extraction.

On the palate

The entry is powerful, carried by dark fruit and herbal spice. The tannin is young but very fine-grained, the minerality saline and slaty. After sufficient aeration a softness emerges, while the finish remains pleasantly demanding. 14.0% vol., made dry.

Food pairings

With a crisp tartlet with wild mushrooms, dried plums and salted almond, with caramelised beetroot with smoked wild boar ham and thyme, or with a lamb rack au gratin with black-olive breadcrumbs and rosemary jus.

Special features

A wine capable of ageing for decades to come. Anyone opening it now should decant it and choose a large glass: only with air does its softer side emerge.
