About this wine

Character

The Athénaïs AmalGamay 2023 is a translucent, acidity-driven red wine from eastern Burgundy, bottled by Château de Béru as Vin de France. It thrives on energy and drinkability rather than power: 13.5% ABV, dry, with lively acidity as its backbone and fine spice behind it. Every sip calls for the next.

Terroir and origin

Château de Béru lies in eastern Chablis, where Athénais de Béru has run the family estate since 2004 and farms her own vineyards biodynamically, using horses instead of heavy machinery and her own home-made preparations. The grapes for the AmalGamay don't come from the estate's own vineyards but from a partner estate on the Yonne that has long farmed organically.

Grape variety and vinification

60% Gamay and 40% Aligoté ferment together. The Gamay is fermented as whole clusters and blended with the Aligoté must, so the red and white varieties come together already during fermentation. In the cellar, the hand of winemaker Gaëlle Ribé is evident, while the estate as a whole follows a line of minimal intervention and spontaneous fermentation with its own yeasts.

On the palate

The bouquet is fresh: wild strawberry, Mieze Schindler, blackberry, and a hint of sloe, underscored by a touch of yeast and forest floor. On the palate, the Gamay delivers juicy red fruit, while the Aligoté contributes the acidity and a trace of pepper and salt. An unusual pairing of two grape varieties that nonetheless comes together in harmony.

Notable features

2023 is the fifth vintage of this wine, in which the two sibling Burgundian grape varieties Gamay and Aligoté meet in the same glass. The label carries the Demeter logo.
