About this wine
Character
A dry Alsace white wine that works quietly while showing plenty of substance. The texture is dense, almost creamy, and the acidity remains noticeable without ever narrowing the wine. Anyone expecting the early-drinking, easy-going style typical of Auxerrois will find the opposite here: a wine with a mineral backbone and a calm evolution.
Terroir and origin
Clos Windsbuhl is a monopole vineyard of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht. The vines root in soils carrying varying proportions of limestone and marl. It is one of the estate's cooler sites, ripening later, which lends the aromatics greater precision.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Auxerrois. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996; the estate today spans 42 hectares, with yields of 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare. Ageing follows the house style: at least six months of lees contact, followed by one to two years of maturation before a bottle leaves the cellar. In the glass, 12.0% vol.
On the palate
The entry is round and soft, then yellow pear, quince and white peach take over, joined by white blossom and a touch of almond. The acidity lends tension, and the finish stays long, saline and clearly defined.
Distinctive features
The Humbrecht family has been growing wine since 1620; since 2019, Pierre Émile Humbrecht has joined as the eleventh generation. The long cellar ageing before release is a house principle and shapes the texture and depth of this wine.
