About this wine
Character
A Barbaresco that reveals its complexity not through power but through tension. In the glass, a bright sour cherry red with a hint of rust at the rim; on the nose, a dark, juicy fruit that repeatedly tips into ripe tomato and beetroot: fruitiness, earthiness and depth all at once. Behind it, sour cherry, elderberry and mulberry. With air come cocoa butter, lightly roasted coffee, liquorice and liquorice root, alongside black and white pepper and juniper. A cool, smoky minerality of flint and wet stone runs through it all.
Terroir and origin
Cascina La Berchialla sits at the top of the Roncagliette Cru in Barbaresco. Olek Bondonio's great-great-great-grandfather was among the co-founders of the Produttori del Barbaresco in 1894, and the estate has been in family hands for over 200 years. In total, Bondonio farms seven hectares across Barbaresco's top vineyard sites.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Nebbiolo, vinified dry, 14.0% vol. In the vineyards, biodynamic principles shape daily life without becoming a spectacle: no website, no tasting room.
On the palate
What the nose suggests in power resolves into a silky, almost weightless texture. The tannin stays restrained, acting only as a fine structural element; the architecture is carried by a precise, firm acidity. Saline, stony, yet bright and transparent, with pressure from the mid-palate, without ever becoming broad. The fruit recedes, sour cherry remains, overlaid with rosemary, oregano and sage. On the long finish, the tomato note returns.
Distinctive features
These wines are rare, as seven hectares yield only limited quantities. Bondonio was a professional snowboarder before returning to the family estate; in the cellar, a skateboard half-pipe stands between the barrels.
